Mission Statement

Our department is looking to foster a diverse, inclusive environment. The Diversity, Equity, Inclusion (DEI) Committee has been created with the following goals:

    1. Educate our department members on topics of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    2. Increase faculty diversity through improved recruitment and retention processes.
    3. Increase trainee diversity through improved recruitment processes.
    4. Understand and improve upon health care disparities in our system.

Why is diversity essential to radiology?

Radiologists serve a diverse patient population, and having providers with varying backgrounds leads to better patient care. These physicians bring their diverse experiences to the field, which promotes cultural competency [Ngo-Metzger et al. 2006]. Health care disparities affect those seeking radiology across a spectrum of services [Safdar 2019], and we cannot successfully address these inequalities without proper representation in healthcare. Diverse viewpoints promote innovation [Hewlett et al. 2013], which is especially crucial in a constantly evolving field like radiology.

How does having a diverse staff/faculty help with patient care or outcomes? What are the benefits of having a diverse team?

Providers from various backgrounds and experiences can better understand patient needs. A diverse radiology team can address concerns and expand healthcare access for diverse communities, especially those that are traditionally underserved [Cohen et al. 2002]. Diversity enables creative solutions to improve patient outcomes, and having a diverse workforce allows us to provide patients with higher quality care [Hewlett et al. 2013].

Education

  • Inviting speakers to discuss diversity topics, such as implicit and explicit bias.
  • Educating our faculty, staff, and trainees to connect with and serve our diverse patient population.
  • Sponsoring rotations and internships focused on underrepresented groups in radiology.
  • Conducting student outreach to promote interest in radiology.

Recruitment/Retention

  • Improving recruitment efforts by being mindful of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Engaging with younger students, in high school and college, to promote interest in radiology.
  • Ensuring recruitment and retention of diverse faculty and trainees.

Research

  • Being aware of biases and ensuring they do not affect study outcomes.
  • Funding and supporting research regarding health disparities and how they can be addressed.
  • Conducting research that examines health disparities in radiology and how they affect patient outcomes.

Diversity and inclusion are core values that invigorate the UCI Department of Radiology’s mission: Discover. Teach. Heal.

We are committed to recruiting, admitting and educating talented students — as well as hiring and promoting faculty and staff members — whose backgrounds reflect California’s rich ethnic and cultural diversity.

We embrace and celebrate differences of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, language, military service, disability and socio-economic status because they inform our world view and that of our medical students.

Our commitment also includes the recruitment and retention of faculty and senior administrative staff who represent our diverse communities.
