Overview

The UCI Health School of Medicine Department of Radiological Sciences offers a five-year residency training program in interventional radiology through our integrated program. The first three years focus on diagnostic radiology and the last two years focus on interventional radiology. Graduates will be eligible for dual board certification in IR/DR

Resident training is conducted primarily at the UC Irvine Medical Center and the Long Beach VA, supplemented by rotations in Pediatric Radiology at CHOC Children’s.

UC Irvine Medical Center, located in the heart of Orange County, is home to the county’s only Level I trauma center, its only nationally designated comprehensive cancer center, and a modern acute care hospital. The spacious Department of Radiological Sciences houses state-of-the-art equipment including newly redesigned reading rooms, modern angio/interventional suites, and brand-new computers running the latest in PACS/dictation software. Didactic conferences are held in the department’s state-of-the-art conference room.

The VA Long Beach Medical Center, a 421-bed medical facility located in beautiful Long Beach, CA, is an integral component of resident education, boasting freshly remodeled reading rooms and a new completely redesigned angio/interventional suite. Exceptional faculty, quality didactic conferences, and a community-based patient population at the VA strengthen resident education and broaden residents’ clinical exposure.

Resident-centered

New residents will complete one year of rotations before being assigned any independent, in-house call. In general, the call is structured to be “bottom-heavy” with very light call assigned to more senior residents, allowing ample time for board preparation. The chief residents make the rotation, vacation and call schedules, with the approval of the program director, and actively elicit the preferences of individual residents.

On average, we have 12 hours of teaching conferences every week, including an entire afternoon dedicated solely to didactic teaching. In addition, our residents are actively involved in giving teaching conferences to fellow radiology residents and rotating medical students, and regularly present at interdepartmental conferences and grand rounds.

Research encouraged

We offer a required dedicated research rotation in addition to elective time that can be used for research. Nearly all of our residents have published journal articles, co-authored book chapters, and/or presented at national and local society meetings.

Our department provides a generous discretionary fund to all residents. This fund is typically used to cover the cost of textbooks, initial California Medical Board Licensing fees, initial American Board of Radiology registration fees, a four-week course in Washington, D.C., at the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology (AIRP), as well as board review courses. In addition to this fund, the department provides funding for residents presenting at national meetings and attendance at certain teaching conferences.

As a whole, our program is resident-centered and offers an exceptionally well-rounded training experience designed to prepare residents for careers in either academic radiology or private practice, all in an amazing location. If you have any questions regarding the program, please let us know.
